In a small grotto in 1858 on February the 11th a 14 year old peasant girl called Bernadette Soubirous is believed to have seen eighteen visions of the ‘Blessed Virgin’.
Following these apparitions a spring appeared and reports of healing were described. In 1862 an official pilgrimage was announced and since then pilgrims from all over the world have traveled to Lourdes to worship, pray and to be healed of disability and ill health.
To fulfil the 14th apparition “Go and tell the priests that people are to come here in procession and to build a chapel here”
